ENGAGE-ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise

ENGAGE Expands reach: PWANI University joins the collaboration with University of Nairobi

The ENGAGE (Enabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise) project continues to gain momentum! On May 3rd, 2024, Professor Julius Oyugi, Director of the University of Nairobi Institute for Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) and Principal Investigator for ENGAGE, led a team from UoN and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to PWANI University.

This visit marked the successful conclusion of inception meetings to all six regional universities in Kenya that will partner with the University of Nairobi (UoN) to implement the ENGAGE program. In the preceding weeks ENGAGE team paid visits to Meru University, Dedan Kimathi University, Kabarak University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, and South Eastern Kenya University.

The purpose of the visit to PWANI University was to establish a collaboration on the ENGAGE project, a five-year Takeda-funded initiative focused on building data science and machine learning for public health capacity in girls and young women from underserved backgrounds.

The UoN team was warmly received by PWANI University Vice Chancellor, Professor James H. P. Kahindi, and his team. The engaging discussions were followed by a tour showcasing the university’s facilities.

Both teams expressed enthusiasm for the project’s potential to transform the lives of underprivileged girls and women.

PWANI University’s inclusion strengthens ENGAGE’s reach and impact, fostering a future where more Kenyan women flourish in the field of data science, machine learning and AI for public health.
